ELECTROLYTES
Dr. Bradley to Patient – “I think you could be dehydrated”.
Patient – “But I drink lots of water”.
Just because you drink lots of water does not mean you are hydrated. Getting enough water everyday from drinking and eating fresh fruits and vegetables is important for your body to work effectively. Have you ever drank lots of water in a short period of time? Within the next couple hours you would be going to the bathroom more frequently. I would challenge you to drink the same amount of Pedialyte, Poweraid(high sugar and colouring), coconut water, or other sugar free electrolyte powder. You won’t be in the bathroom as much. Your body will retain more of the fluid because of the electrolytes. MUSCLES and NERVE cells work and repair better with electrolytes around. Having more electrolytes in your body will often reduce or stop headaches, cramps, restless legs, and fatigue.Fresh fruits and vegetables are a great source of electrolytes.
Which is the right electrolyte drink?
In general, cheaper ones only contain salt (NaCl), two of the 8 electrolytes. Better ones replace all eight electrolytes and water soluble vitamins and minerals.
- Sodium
- Chloride
- Potassium
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Hydrogen phosphate
- Hydrogen carbonate
- Bicarbonate
- Vitamin E
- B Vitamins
Stay hydrated and your body will be ready to do more each and every day.
Adults, senoirs, children or pregnant women who start vomiting and/or diarrhea need electrolytes. They will recover faster.
Caffiene containing beverages, certain drugs (diuretics, ACE inhibitors, SSRI antidepressants), heat waves, kidney disease, cancer treatment and others also can cause electrolyte imblances.
